Bengaluru metro: Yellow line is running, Pink line still has no official opening date
The Yellow line opened on 10 August 2025, according to PIB. For the Pink line we found no official opening notice as of 12 October 2026. This report shows how to check a brochure's metro claim and what a delay could cost each month.
Rules and rates as of 12 October 2026.
Project brochures across south and north Bengaluru lean hard on two Namma Metro corridors: the Yellow line from RV Road to Bommasandra, and the Pink line from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara. One of them carries passengers. For the other, we could not find an official opening notice as of 12 October 2026. Here is what the government record shows, what it does not, and how to price the gap.
Yellow line: opened, on the record
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) release of 10 August 2025 says the Prime Minister inaugurated the Yellow line of Bangalore Metro Phase-2 that day. The release describes it as running from RV Road (Ragigudda) to Bommasandra, with a route length of over 19 km and 16 stations, worth around ₹7,160 crore. A PIB release dated 9 August 2025, announcing the visit, gives the same figures.
So "near the Yellow line" describes a working line. What remains is which station, and how far by road.
Pink line: no official opening notice found
For the Pink line, we checked the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation's (BMRCL) English and Kannada websites, PIB and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. BMRCL's home page lists only the Purple and Green lines as operating, which suggests that section has not been updated. Its project-status tables load dynamically and showed no data when we read them. We found no BMRCL notice, Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) sanction or PIB release giving an opening date for any part of the Pink line.
Unofficial reports have suggested opening windows for the elevated section, but none of those dates appears on an official page, so we do not repeat them here. We also could not find an official, current completion date for the underground section towards Nagawara.
The official record also shows how far stated targets and actual openings can drift apart. A Lok Sabha answer from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on 28 November 2024 (Unstarred Question 496) lists the Phase II stretches commissioned up to then. The latest is Nagasandra to Madavara, on 7 November 2024, and no Pink line stretch appears. A PIB release of 23 May 2025 says the Centre would examine Phase-2's revised cost estimate once Karnataka sent a cabinet-approved proposal. Neither document gives a Pink line opening date.
What "5 minutes to metro" actually means
Take a hypothetical project 2.5 km by road from a Pink line elevated station, advertised as "5 minutes to metro". The time is simply distance divided by speed:
time (minutes) = distance (km) ÷ speed (km/h) × 60
- Driving at an unbroken 30 km/h: 2.5 ÷ 30 × 60 = 5 minutes. This is the only way the brochure figure works.
- Walking at 4.8 km/h: 2.5 ÷ 4.8 × 60 = about 31 minutes each way.
- Before the station opens, the figure describes a trip to a station that has no trains, so the minutes don't count for a commute.
Worked example: the monthly cost of waiting
Every rupee figure below is an illustrative assumption, not a BMRCL fare or an auto/cab tariff. Assume 22 working days a month and two trips a day to an office 12 km away.
- Line not open: cab for the whole trip at an assumed ₹25 per km. That is 12 × ₹25 = ₹300 a trip, so ₹300 × 2 × 22 = ₹13,200 a month.
- Line open: auto for the 2.5 km to the station at an assumed ₹60, plus an assumed ₹50 metro fare. That is ₹110 a trip, so ₹110 × 2 × 22 = ₹4,840 a month.
- Gap: ₹13,200 − ₹4,840 = ₹8,360 a month. A three-month slip costs ₹25,080, and a six-month slip costs ₹50,160.
| Scenario (illustrative) | Last-mile time | Monthly travel cost | Extra vs line open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brochure claim: "5 minutes to metro" | 5 min (car at 30 km/h) | Not stated | Not stated |
| Line open, auto to station | About 5–10 min by road | ₹4,840 | ₹0 |
| Line open, walk to station | About 31 min | ₹2,200 (fare only) | −₹2,640 |
| Line not open, cab all the way | Not applicable | ₹13,200 | ₹8,360 |
| Six-month delay, cab all the way | Not applicable | ₹79,200 total | ₹50,160 total |
How to read a metro claim in a brochure
- Name the station. "Near the metro" is not a station. Ask which one, and on which line.
- Check its status on an official source. That means a BMRCL notice, a CMRS sanction or a PIB release, not a hoarding or a portal listing.
- Measure the road distance yourself and convert it to walking minutes with the formula above.
- Keep the brochure. If a connectivity claim influenced your decision, a dated copy is useful if you later raise a complaint with the Karnataka RERA authority. A lawyer can tell you whether a particular claim is actionable.
We will update this report when BMRCL or the CMRS publishes an opening notice for the Pink line.
What this means for you
This week, take the brochure for any Bengaluru project you are considering and write down the exact metro station it relies on. Check that station's status on BMRCL's website or in a PIB release, and note the date of the page you read. For the Pink line, record that no official opening date was found as of 12 October 2026. Measure the road distance from the site gate to the station on a map, then compute walking time as distance ÷ 4.8 × 60. Next, compute your own monthly gap: your cab cost per trip, minus your auto-plus-metro cost per trip, multiplied by your monthly trips. Multiply that by three and by six to see what a delay could cost. Save a dated copy or photo of the brochure page. If a connectivity claim shaped your decision, ask a lawyer or the Karnataka RERA helpdesk whether it can be relied on.
