Mumbai metro check: which lines run today, which are in testing, and what brochures leave out

Lines 2A, 7, 3 (Aqua), Navi Mumbai Line 1 and the first phases of Lines 2B and 9 are running, according to official pages. Line 9 Phase 2 and Thane's Line 4 have no official opening date. Here is the record as of 13 October 2026, and how to price a planned station.

Brochures across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region promise "metro at your doorstep". Some of those lines carry passengers today. Others are on trial, in testing, or still on paper. Here is what the operators' own pages and government releases say, as we read them on 13 October 2026, and how to price the gap between an open station and a planned one.

What is running, on the official record

The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation (MMMOCL) lists four lines on its network under operation page: Line 2A (Dahisar East to Andheri West, 18.6 km, 17 stations), Line 7 (16.5 km, 13 stations), Line 2B Phase 1 (Chembur to Maharashtra Nagar–Mandale, five stations) and Line 9 Phase 1 (Dahisar East to Kashigaon, 4.68 km, four stations).

An MMMOCL press release dated 6 April 2026 says Line 9 Phase 1 and Line 2B Phase 1 started on 8 April 2026. Line 7 now runs through to Kashigaon as one corridor with Line 9, and the release puts that Gundavali–Kashigaon run at 19.79 km.

The two MMMOCL documents do not agree on one number. The operating-network page gives Line 2B Phase 1 as 5.58 km, while the April release says 5.38 km. We have shown both.

For Line 3 (Aqua line), PIB releases of 7 and 8 October 2025 say the Prime Minister inaugurated Phase 2B, from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, and dedicated the whole 33.5 km line, from Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR with 27 stations, to the nation. The same releases list Mumbai Metro Line 1 and Navi Mumbai Metro among the operators on the Mumbai One ticketing app.

In Navi Mumbai, CIDCO's budget statement for 2026-27 says Metro Line 1, Belapur to Pendhar (11.10 km, 11 stations), was launched in November 2023.

What is not running yet

  • Line 9 Phase 2: an MMMOCL release of 13 September 2026 (read it here) says signalling software for three more stations had arrived and testing was under way. It gives no opening date.
  • Lines 4 and 4A (Thane): MMMOCL reported a trial run on 22 September 2025 over 4.4 km, from Gaimukh to Vijay Garden. That release set Phase 1 (Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction) for April 2026 and Phase 2 for October 2026. As of 13 October 2026, neither stretch appears on MMMOCL's operating-network page or its timetable, and we found no official opening notice. Passenger service needs CMRS approval first, the release says.
  • Navi Mumbai Lines 1A and 2: the CIDCO statement says construction is proposed from FY 2027-28. Line 8 (the Gold line, airport to airport) is targeted to start operations from 2030.
  • Other MMRDA lines: the MMRDA website blocks automated readers, so we could not check the status of the remaining corridors there.

Worked example: open station or planned station

Take two hypothetical flats for someone working near Gundavali (Andheri East). Flat A is a 0.8 km walk from Kashigaon, which is open. Flat B is near a planned Line 9 Phase 2 station. Until that opens, its owner takes an auto about 3 km to Kashigaon.

Fare: the Gundavali–Kashigaon run is 19.79 km. MMMOCL's FAQ slab table for Lines 2A and 7, which is marked "proposed", puts 18–24 km at ₹40. Auto fare, auto speed and waiting time below are illustrative assumptions, not official tariffs. Assume 22 working days and two trips a day, so 44 trips.

  • Flat A: ₹40 × 44 = ₹1,760 a month.
  • Flat B: (₹40 metro + ₹60 assumed auto) × 44 = ₹4,400 a month.
  • Gap: ₹4,400 − ₹1,760 = ₹2,640 a month, or ₹15,840 over six months and ₹31,680 over a year if Phase 2 slips that long.

MMMOCL lists a 45-trip pass at 15% off the actual fare. That brings Flat A to ₹1,760 × 0.85 = ₹1,496.

Time uses minutes = km ÷ km/h × 60. Walking 0.8 km at 4.8 km/h takes 10 minutes. The 3 km auto ride at an assumed 15 km/h takes 12 minutes, plus an assumed 5-minute wait, so 17 minutes. That is 7 extra minutes a leg, 14 a day, and 14 × 22 = 308 minutes, about 5.1 hours a month.

How to test a brochure's metro line

  • Ask for the station's name and line, and the phase it belongs to.
  • Check whether that station appears on the operator's timetable today, not on a route map.
  • If it is not open, look for an official opening notice. A target date in a release is not a notice.
  • Keep a dated copy of the brochure. A lawyer or the MahaRERA helpdesk can tell you whether a connectivity claim can be relied on.

What this means for you

This week, write down the exact metro station each shortlisted project relies on, with its line and phase. Open MMMOCL's timetable page (mmmocl.co.in) and check whether that station has first and last train times today. For Line 3 check PIB or MMRCL, and for Navi Mumbai check CIDCO. Save a screenshot with the date. If the station is not running, note that a target date is not an opening notice. Then work out your own monthly gap: your last-mile cost per trip to the nearest open station, multiplied by your trips a month, and the extra minutes the same way. Multiply by six and by twelve to see what a delay could cost. Keep the brochure page. If a metro claim is shaping your decision, ask a lawyer or the MahaRERA helpdesk whether it can be relied on.
